Who’s Hiring in Iowa?
Iowa is an amazing state. Yes, there’s corn. But there’s also a wide variety of industries from insurance, to agriculture to green energy. It’s made quite a transformation in the past quarter century and agriculture, while certainly present, only make up a small percentage of the state. With that in mind, let’s take a look at a few employers around the state:
- Clipper Windpower - Iowa is fairly flat, with only some 1,200 feet between it’s highest and lowest points. It’s also got lots of open fields. That gives the wind plenty of time to build momentum close to the ground and tt turns out that Iowa is the number two wind producer in the nation. They also have a government that’s been open to green energy. That must have promted Clipper Windpower to (from the fashionably green California) to build turbines in Cedar Rapids. - Pella - While not directly a green energy company, the windows and doors they produce have won Pella the Sustained Excellence award as part of the ENERGY STAR® program. This company has some 10,000 employees, but is based in the rather small town of – you guessed it, Pella, Iowa. It kind of reminds me of Clearwater Creek, based in northern Idaho, combining the stability of a larger company in a small town. - Principal Financial Group – This Des Moines based financial services company is pretty well known and it’s easy to see why. They have over 10,000 employees and make billions in revenue every year. They do a variety of investing and banking services and were started as Banker’s Life way back in 1879. They’ve rated rather well as one of the best places to work as well. Here’s their career page.
