Who’s Hiring in California?

The “Who’s Hiring” series has covered some smaller states recently, but now it’s time to take on the most populated state in the Union. With a population pushing nearly 40 million, there are plenty of job seekers, but there’s also plenty of opportunities. It’s also a diverse state with everything from Silicon Valley internet and technology companies to Hollywood studios to agriculture. With all that in mind, let’s get started:

Google — It’s hard to believe this huge Mountain View company was just a small internet start up just over 10 years ago, trying to take on the well-established Yahoo. Now it’s the clear leader in internet search, raking in huge amounts of money on those little “sponsored links” that appear alongside it’s regular results and in websites all over the internet. When they aren’t busy doing that, they are developing a variety of products to expand their empire. The good news is that their hiring hasn’t slowed down, even in a recession. As you might expect, they are hiring software developers, but according to their career pages, they are hiring in advertising, finance, legal and more.
Northrup Grumman – This Los Angeles based company is one of the leading defense contractors in the US and employs over 100,000 people. They naturally hire people in technology and IT, which is natural as it’s one of the industries hiring now, but they also need all kinds of specialties to keep a company that big going. Gap, Inc. — The Gap is a well-known clothing retailer, but did you know that their brand line includes Bananna Republic, Old Navy, Piperline and Athleta? That gives them a broad reach and the need for quality employees in spite of an economy that’s struggling. The corporate offices are in San Francisco and they currently have 30 openings at their corporate offices alone, with many more in their retail stores in California and beyond. Pacific Gas and Electric – Utilities are always big employers and this is even a bigger deal in a large state like California. PG&E claims to provide power to 1 in 20 homes in the US and serves the northern 2/3rd of the state (see Southern California Edison if SoCal is more your thing). They hire for a wide variety of positions, so check PG&E’s career page for details.
