Financial Reflections

In this part of the Financial Reflections “Who’s Hiring” series, I head one state west of my current location to the great state of Alabama.  Alabama is full of surprises, with warm weather, access to the Gulf of Mexico, plenty of nature and some great employers.

Who’s Hiring in Alabama?

Birmingham

• University of Alabama at Birmingham — This university offers a full academic program and a hospital, meaning plenty of job possibilites across the board, some offering benefit plans.  Check out UAB’s current job openings page to see what’s open now.
• Alabama Power — This division of Southern Company hires thousands in Birmingham.  Check out their careers page at Southern Company to see who they are hiring now.

Huntsville

• NASA — As you might have noticed, Alabama counters many common notions.  This state employs real “rocket scientists” at the Marshall Space Flight Center and at the US Space and Rocket Center.  Check out NASA’s job page for who’s hiring now.  And don’t worry if you’re not a rocket scientist, they employ all kinds of professions including camp counselors for Space Camp.
• Huntsville Hospital — Huntsville residents don’t just do rocket science, they also do brain surgery!  The Huntsville Hospital employs over 630, physicians and hundreds more nurses, techs and support staff.  Health care is an industry that’s hiring now, so check out their employment page for more information.

Mobile

• ST Mobile Aerospace — This company performs all kinds of airplane maintenance and employs some 1,500 people, with the added bonus of keeping you near the water in this coastal city.  Check out their company page to see if they are hiring now.
• Austal USA — Don’t like planes, try ship building at Australian ship builder’s US headquarters.  According to Wikipedia, they have 1,000 employees now and are looking to expand.  As usual, you can check their corporate page to find jobs building some pretty impressive boats (or just click to see the videos and pictures, it’s pretty cool).

Every time I do one of these “who’s hiring in” pages, I learn something new about the state I’m profiling.  I certainly didn’t expect so much technology in Alabama, and what I’ve shown here is just the start.  Check out the jobs page to see who’s hiring in Alabama right now.
