What Industries Are Hiring Now?
With unemployment continuing to climb, it’s getting harder and harder to find a job. But there are industries out there that are hiring now, and I thought I’d to a search to find where people think the jobs are. A good strategy might be to find growth industries and focus on them first.
I came on that genius conclusion by landing a job that combines two of the industries listed below. Here’s what looks like a consensus for industries that are hiring now:
- Health Care – There are jobs almost across the board here. Jobs for nurses, support, technicians and doctors (of course) seem to be around. In fact 4 of CNN’s top 12 companies for hiring are in health care.
- Insurance — outside of health care, insurance companies took 2 of CNN’s top 12 spots.
- Software — Computer jobs continue to be around to support all kinds of industries. I’m fortunate to be in this category. FastCompany Magazine lists software jobs like computer software engineer and computer system analyst among the t0p jobs. My current employer? They coordinate insurance, medicare and worker’s comp claims – health care support.
- Globalization – As the world shrinks, demand is growing for people who can speak multiple languages and can handle international business.
Of course, the best job is the one that you can land, no matter what the industry. With the way unemployment numbers have jumped, any opening is up for grabs.
What’s your take on the unemployment situation? Just what industries are hiring now? Got a great tip? Share it in the comments below.

I definitely agree that is beneficial to speak more than one language. I speak two languages and it has greatly. I am suprised that health care is actually hiring because too often do we hear stories about hospital cutbacks.
Microsoft just had their first layoffs in history: http://www.cnbc.com/id/28791677 … you might want to take software off that list
Thanks for mentioning the MS layoffs. There is one ray of hope in Redmond — the article states “Microsoft will be adding ‘thousands of jobs’ in strategic areas like Internet search, where it has been lagging behind Google.” Likely most of those will be serious software talent. Too bad they have to shed jobs before adding some.

FR: I am surprised at inclusion of computer softwares in this list. Perhaps, you want to say higher-end of softwares (architects, modeling, system analysts, etc) that is approx. 10% of total jobs. Rest run-of-the-mill 90% in programming, operations, QA, etc are going down n down. good summary though…
You’re the second to note that. The run-of-the-mill jobs may indeed be taking a hit, but that’s also already been happening with outsourcing. I did notice that part of Google’s layoffs were targeted at HR folks. Good news is that the existing software jobs are in place (for now) but few HR folks are needed if there’s a hiring freeze.
