Financial Reflections

Personal Finance for those stuck in the middle.

About

When some people have a mid-life crisis, they buy a sports car. Others go off on an exotic trip, take up bungee jumping, or get plastic surgery.

The real crisis began for me when I woke up and realized I was too broke to do any of those things. It was like getting out of the shower and daring to take a look at myself in the mirror – trust me, neither my body or finances are pretty. But I had to make a bare assesment of my finances and my future. From now on, I’m going to give my personal finances a good look in the mirror regularly. That isn’t going to be easy, especially at first, but the results should be worth it in the long run.

I also have this theory that many people clothe themselves with fancy things to hide the fact that they are broke. The facts seem to bear this out. I drive to work with new luxury sedans on either side of me, but personal savings are very low. Something isn’t adding up.

Not only that, but consumer debt is at a record. That makes it hard for people to finance for retirement, much less pay the bills every month. Some people are hiding under clothes they haven’t even paid for.

No more of that for me. I’m going to shed the weight like so much excess fat and try to tone and develop some kind of an investment portfolio. Join me in the journey, and maybe we can learn something together.
